SNYDER'S REVIEW
So
much of “Anything Else’s” success
rests on the past experiences of those who see it. Jerry (Jason Biggs)
and Amanda (Christina Ricci) are a dysfunctional couple who have
no business being together. Jerry is insecure, letting Amanda walk
all over him. And Amanda is selfish and neurotic – a woman
who wants everything from Jerry until she gets bored. Granted, what
you’re reading has a man’s slant, but that’s exactly
the point. “Anything Else” zeroes in on the pains of
love – pains that will be funnier for those who have been burnt
one too many times. Written and directed by Woody Allen, it is funnier
than most of his recent works, and sees him in a role that suits
him better than his recent efforts – a quirky, paranoid and
self-absorbed mentor for Jerry who seems to know everything about
life except how to live it like a normal person.
