| Like father like son, or so the Monster's Ball goes. In Marc Foster's racially-charged new film (think the The Green Mile meets Affliction), a grieving widow (Halle Berry) and a racist ex-cop (Billy Bob Thornton) mend racial wounds with their burgeoning romance. The specter of well-meaning race-tension melodramas (The Defiant Ones) seems to be on full display here. Halle Berry's performance as the grieving Leticia is likely to be the film's best shot at an Oscar nomination. Forster has clout, coming off the success of last year's indie favorite Everything Put Together; Forster won the "Someone To Watch Award" at the 2001 Independent Spirit Awards. Monster's Ball will be released by Lions Gate Films on December 26. [From Slant Magazine]
